Best Winter Warmer Cafes

There’s something quite special about wrapping up warm and getting outside for a good old walk on a chilly winter’s day but we’ve got to hold our hands up; our fave part is always the well-earned café stop.

The cosiest atmospheres, tastiest comfort foods and warmest welcomes hide behind the doors of Cornwall’s indie cafes - here are a few of our favourites.

Within 12 miles of us...

Caerhays Beach Café – best for something a bit different

Sitting on the edge of Porthluney beach and in the shadows of the magnificent Caerhays Castle, this small but stylish, wood-clad café has got all the moves. The rustic menu, boozy hot chocolates and irresistible cakes are perfect warm-your-insides daytime fodder, while on special evenings the outdoor pizza oven and Churros hut gets everyone’s tummies rumbling. It’s a surprise find in a secluded spot and we’re big fans!

Short & Strong, Charlestown – best for a caffeine fix

These guys seriously know their coffee. It’s brewed to perfection and served alongside the most incredible selection of cakes (homemade chocolate and beetroot cake anyone?). The service is top notch, dietary requirements are well catered for and dogs are welcome. Oh, and it’s just 10 minutes from us. Need we say more?

Duchy of Cornwall Nursery Cafe, Lostwithiel – best for local produce

Grab a spot by the log burning fire and warm up with a hearty bowl of homemade soup. This is where winter days get cosy and food is deliciously homemade, local and freshly prepared. And well as bursting with Cornish flavour, this café lucks out in the location department too as it just so happens to be nestled amongst one of Cornwall’s most impressive garden nurseries. Be prepared to leave with something green and gorgeous tucked under your arm!

Slight further afield in Cornwall but well worth the trip

Gylly Beach Café, Falmouth – best for style

Thought beach cafes were all sandy floors and salt sprayed windows? No, no, no. This gem on Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth sets the bar for stylish interiors. It’s all sleek wood, funky furniture and magnificent views and don’t even get us started on the menu. You’ve just got try the legendary steak burger and the handcrafted wild yeast organic sourdough is to die-for. It comes fresh from the neighbouring glass-fronted beach bakery where the ovens fire up just a stone’s throw from lapping waves. How’s that for cool?

Poldhu Beach Café, Mullion – best for hot chocolates

When it comes to hot chocolate, Poldhu Beach Café on the Lizard Peninsula wins hands down. There’s hot chocolate, Special hot chocolate, Proper Job hot chocolate and Poldhutastic hot chocolate – and we haven’t even mentioned the five festive variations that come out for Christmas! If you’ve got a sweet tooth and a penchant for big, golden beaches, this is your heaven.

The Watering Hole, Perranporth – best for location

Beach cafés are dotted right along Cornwall’s coast but it’s the Watering Hole on Perranporth Beach that holds Kingpin status. Quite literally on the beach it rocks a chilled-out vibe and is the Cornish lifestyle personified. Come winter and terrace heaters keep the decking area toasty, while inside you’ll find the ultimate ringside seat for when a storm is brewing out on the ocean!

The Sorting Office, St Agnes – best for Cornish charm

Cosy, cute, Cornish, cool – this petite café buried in the heart of St Agnes is worthy of every compliment going. Great coffee, fresh pastries, delicious cakes and bucket-loads of character, it’s the perfect place to wriggle out of winter woollies and fill up on warmth and charm.

Heligan Caravan and Camping is open from January 3rd. Enjoy a winter break in Cornwall with us.
