Winter warmer recipes

By Pentewan Sands on the January 14th, 2022 in

Some may not think it, but winter in Cornwall can be one of the most beautiful and enchanting times to visit. Picture long wintry walks across blissfully quiet beaches, storm watching, cosy pubs to enjoy local cuisine and relaxing evenings to spend quality time with loved ones.

Fresh weather also calls for some hearty winter warmers to keep you going through the colder spells. So, we have put together a few simple recipe ideas which you can recreate, whether you’re staying in your own motorhome or caravan or you’ve chosen to stay in one of our holiday homes, equipped with everything you could possibly need during your stay.

Breakfast

As everyone knows breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially when you’ve got a full day of activities planned. Some easy breakfast ideas to help kick start your day include:

  • A big bowl of porridge – topped with fruit, nuts, honey or whatever you fancy!
  • Full breakfast – a classic, but always a winner
  • Pancakes – you can get very creative when it comes to toppings for these

Bangers and mash

A strong contender on our list of hearty winter meal ideas is, of course, sausage and mash. A very simple and inexpensive meal which all the family will love.

Campfire stew

Possibly the simplest, yet the tastiest recipe is a campfire stew. Including everything you need - potatoes, vegetables and meat (or meat substitute to make a veggie option), you can chuck all ingredients into a pan and simmer away. Great served with dumplings or some locally baked bread and butter.

Here's a basic campfire stew recipe to get you going

Soup

A typical lunchtime dish for colder months is of course a yummy bowl of soup. There are plenty of different flavours to choose from, including vegetable, chicken, mushroom, tomato and many more. It is also a great way to use up any spare veggies you have leftover at the end of your holiday.

We couldn’t decide on a particular flavour of soup, so here are a few different recipes to suit all tastes

Chili Con Carne

If you’re looking for a meal with an extra kick to it, then chilli con carne would be at the top of our list! It’s easy to prepare, full of flavour and can be served in a number of ways – with rice, nachos, jacket potato or simply on its own. You can also make a simple vegetable chilli or use Quorn mince to create vegetarian/vegan options.
